Perovskite Solar Cells for Space: Assessment of Encapsulation under Proton Irradiation

Abstract

The stability of unencapsulated perovskite solar cells and those encapsulated with a polymer or space grade glass are assessed under high energy proton irradiation. While the unencapsulated devices show radiation tolerance, they suffer degradation when exposed to high temperatures and humidity. Interestingly, both encapsulated devices suffered losses under high energy proton irradiation. For the polymer-based system this is attributed to thermal decomposition of the film, while the glass is shown to generate local heating that appears to prohibitively affect the integrity of the underlying perovskite layers.
