OPTICAL ARCHITECTURES FOR DISPLAYS AND SENSING IN AUGMENTED, VIRTUAL, AND MIXED REALITY, AR, VR, MR VII
Abstract
Metasurface optics present a promising solution for wearable displays by enabling reduced weight, compact size, and enhanced performance. This makes them a highly advantageous technology for the future of Augmented Reality (AR) displays and related applications. In this work, we introduce a multi-layer, achromatic metagrating design for single waveguide-based near-eye display systems, offering an extended overall field of view (FoV). By employing a dual-mode symmetrical transmissive in-coupling system, angular pupil tiling, polarization multiplexing, and optimized grating periods, we achieve a broader horizontal FoV across the RGB spectrum using a low-refractive-index substrate. As a result, this approach aims to enhance both visual quality and wearable comfort by reducing the weight and thickness of the waveguide, thanks to the use of lower-index materials.
