Grating coupler design for VCSELs heterogeneously integrated on silicon nitride

Abstract

Scaling computing infrastructure requires optical I/O with higher bandwidth density and lower power consumption. We propose a bi-layer grating coupler on a low-loss silicon nitride platform for heterogeneously integrated VCSELs using micro-transfer printing. Simulations show a -1.2 dB coupling efficiency from VCSELs to the waveguide.
