A 1.66Gb/s and 5.8pJ/b Transcutaneous IR-UWB Telemetry System with Hybrid Impulse Modulation for Intracortical Brain-Computer Interfaces

Abstract

This work presents an IR-UWB TX for intracortical brain-computer interfaces. The proposed digital-polar TX supports a hybrid impulse modulation: a low-noise ring oscillator with duty-cycle correction for accurate 8PSK, a calibration-free delay generator for 4PPM, and a linear DPA for 4PAM. The presented TX achieves a data rate of 1.66Gbps and consumes 9.7mW (i.e., 5.8pJ/b). With a 15cm transmission range from 15mm below skin, the TX achieves the best range normalized efficiency among prior arts.
